Neiman Marcus

The Story:

This is a relationship that we had for many years at CKD. Working with the creative director for the stores I was given the opportunity to work with the designs from a very early stage and then take it through engineering and fabrication in-house. Our work with them ranged from signage to countertop to floor standing pieces. Below are a few of my favorite pieces that we did with them. Being quite special, these pieces have their own story attached. I hope you love them as much as I do.

Artisan Jewelry Sculptures

The Story:

Are they VM props or are they pieces of art? We'll have to agree that they're both. Either way you look at them, they are pieces that I'm very proud to have made for Neiman Marcus. Sculpture is difficult to design in terms of making drawings and having the pieces fabricated in the way that the client wants. These pieces presented those challenges along with that of inventing and applying a custom finish. We were provided the beautiful agate slices to showcase as the visual focus of these sculptures. Of course the beautiful jewelry that they were designed to showcase and display is the main focus and real purpose of these pieces. The two smallest vitrine sculptures measure around 8.25" x 14.25" x 18" tall, the larger vitrine sculptures measure around 10" x 18.5" x 18" tall and the large back island sculpture measures about 16.5" x 51.25" x 25.5" tall. All of the forms were laser cut from 1/4" plate steel and given a coarse brushed finish before being welded and finished with a custom translucent lacquer. This is a grouping of work that gave us the opportunity to take a departure from what we normally do and take a short trip down a slightly different path.

The Story:

This is the Tools of the Trade Table. What trade, you might ask? Beauty. This table was designed by one of my client's lead designers and was presented to me for engineering and fabrication. The task presented was a formidable one on both fronts. The designer told me that the first conversation we had was the farthest he had gotten with anyone on making this table a reality. It features a polished stainless skirt around the top and a satin steel base with a custom tinted lacquer finish, and it is fully electrified. Corian panels adorn the top as facets separated by polished stainless dividers. The finger holes in the corian serve dual purpose to lift the panels when necessary and to chase wires of appliances (hair dryers, flattening irons, curling irons, etc.) through. The sign holder in the center has a carbon steel back to be used for magnetic signage and an LED video monitor, all surrounded by polished stainless.
